Have you ever thought about making matcha at home?  Here’s our top three recipes for making the perfect homemade matcha.  Preparing your own matcha is easier than you think. Better yet, Kenko Tea’s matcha is very high quality contrasted with what you may find in a cafe.  This means your homemade matcha is going to be vibrant in color, fragrant in smell, and fresh in taste. Let’s take a look how you can make matcha at home.

Ceremonial Matcha at home

We believe the perfect cup of matcha begins with using the best grade of matcha. Kenko Tea’s Ceremonial grade matcha is used in traditional ceremonies in Japan and would be perfect for homemade matcha. Quality matcha is the beginning point in making matcha tea either in a cafe or at home.  For your homemade matcha to be complete, there are a few must have and optional items. I recommend having a sifter on hand to remove any clumps and a bamboo whisk to mix your matcha well. If you forgo the whisk, you can use a milk frother. A matcha bowl and a scoop are optional. Well, let’s get on to making homemade traditional matcha.

Steps

  1. Prepare water to 70 - 80C or 160 - 185F
  2. With your Tea Scoop, scoop a heaping amount of matcha into a sifter, or about ½ teaspoon.
  3. Gently move the scoop around the sifter to release the matcha into the bowl.
  4. Pour 2 ounces or 60 ml of hot water into the bowl and begin whisking vigorously in a W-motion until the matcha is frothy. *** If you forgo the whisk, pour 4 ounces or 120 ml of hot water into the bowl and begin to use your Aerolatte Milk Frother and whisk the matcha until there is a layer of crema or froth on top.
  5. Stop here and enjoy straight from the bowl or add more water, about 2 more ounces, continuing to whisk in a W-motion.
  6. Small, gentle bubbles should be on the top.  Enjoy your perfect cup of matcha.

Congratulations you have prepared matcha at home traditionally.  Please enjoy.

Making a Matcha Latte at Home

A matcha latte is probably the most common way to drink matcha.  This is what you are likely to find in your favorite cafe if they serve matcha.  A cup of homemade matcha latte is easier than you think. You already know how to make matcha at home by repeating the above steps.  Now all we need to do is add the milk. Follow the instructions below to make a matcha latte at home.

Steps

  1. Prepare water to 70 - 80C or 160 - 185F
  2. With your Tea Scoop, scoop a heaping amount of matcha into a sifter, or
    about ½ -1 teaspoon.
  3. Gently move the scoop around the sifter to release the matcha into the bowl.
  4. Pour 2 ounces or 60 ml of hot water into the bowl and begin whisking vigorously in a W-motion until the matcha is frothy.
  5. Transfer the frothy mix into another cup.
  6. Now we will add milk (cow, soy, almond) or cream. If you have an espresso machine at home please use this to heat and froth your milk or cream.  If you do not have one, you can heat your milk in a saucepan or in the microwave. Once the milk is warmed, you can use an Aerolatte Milk Frother to thicken the milk.
  7. Pour the frothy milk into the cup with your matcha.
  8. Enjoy your yummy matcha latte.
  9. Additionally, you can add honey, agave nectar, or even spices like cinnamon and nutmeg to your matcha latte.
Please enjoy your matcha latte!

    Homemade Bulletproof Matcha

Yes, you read that right.  You can use matcha to make your beverage bulletproof.  What is bulletproof matcha? Popularized by Dave Asprey, bulletproof coffee is the combining of healthy fats with black coffee. Bulletproof matcha is leaving out the coffee and using matcha instead. We like mixing it with ghee or grass fed butter, MCT Oil and/or coconut oil.  I also put heavy cream in mine. What is the end result? It is delicious, and is the creamiest glass of matcha I've ever tried. The ghee or butter blends into the tea perfectly, producing a lovely, slightly thicker texture than just a regular cup of matcha. The flavour of the ghee also removes any hint of astringency from the matcha, making it surprisingly sweet, much like a matcha latte, but without the addition of any sugars.

    Steps

    1. Sift 2g of Ceremonial Matcha powder into a glass (this ensures no lumps of matcha powder)
    2. Pour in 70 mL or 2 ½ ounces  of hot water at 80C or 185 F
    3. Add in 1 Tbsp Grass fed Ghee or Grass fed Butter
    4. Add 1 Tbsp MCT Oil or coconut oil
    5. You can use Aerolatte electric milk frother or a blender to mix.
Please enjoy this bulletproof matcha recipe!
